DRAGON PARK RENOVATION
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How to Donate to the Dragon Park Renovation

Here are some frequently asked questions about the dragon park renovation.

Q.  What are you doing with the dragon?
A:
Nothing!  The Dragon will remain the same, except it will get a new coat of paint in August when the volunteer group, VOICE, does some work in the park.

Q:  What is VOICE going to do?
A:
The Mercer Island Parks Department has solicited help from VOICE to clear some brush in the park, install a new path from Island Park Elementary School to the castle play area, and to paint the dragon.  VOICE (Volunteer Outreach In Communities Everywhere) is a summer volunteer program hosted by the City of Mercer Island.

Q:  Why is MIPA involved?
A:
MIPA created the park through volunteer efforts in 1961.  We are enthusiastic to be a part of this rejuvenation effort!

Q:  What is MIPA going to do?
A:
MIPA will be replacing the antiquated and unsafe metal slide area with a CASTLE!!!  The castle colors will blend in with the natural surrounding of the park and will be safe for children ages birth to 6 and will be accessible to children of all abilities.  In addition to the castle, MIPA will be adding 2 pathways, metallaphone, and a dragon drum.

Q:  What do you mean by accessible?
A:
The ADA has set certain standards for a park to be considered “ADA compliant.  We have exceeded each requirement.  In addition, MIPA actively sought the input from teachers, therapists and administrators who work with children with moderate to severe disabilities.

Q:  What does the ADA require?
A:
The ADA requires a specific number of accessible ground level events based on how many elevated play events you have.  Based on our current plan, here are the requirements associated with our play area:

  • Elevated Play Events:         ADA Requires: 9        MIPA has: 16
  • Ground-level Play Events:    ADA Requires: 3        MIPA has: 8
  • Different Activities:             ADA Requires: 3        MIPA has: 7
    • climbers
    • rockers
    • disc traverse
    • musical instruments
    • pretend play
    • activity panels
    • slide

Q:  Who funded this project?
A:
MIPA started the project with $25,000 seed money.  We have received a $15,000 Starbucks Park Grant and a $5,000 Safeco Insurance Grant.  In addition, MIPA raised over $8,000 at a recent auction.

Q:  How much will the playground cost?
A:
The playground and new pathways will cost approximately $80,000.  This includes the cost and installation of all equipment, pathways, and clearing of brush.

Q:  Are you selling bricks?
A:
YES!  We will be selling 2 sizes of bricks at $75 & $100 per brick.  Click here for more information.

A:  Absolutely!  Click here for a list of equipment items or contact Jeanne at
206-795-1655

Q:  How will donors be recognized?
A:  We have five major donor levels.  All major donors will be recognized under the appropriate donor level on a donor recognition sign at the entrance to the castle play area.  Click here for more information on donor levels.

Q:  When will the donor sign be installed?
A:
The donor sign will be installed approximately 6 weeks after the completion of the castle.

Q:  When will the castle be installed?

We are on target for an installation date of Spring 2006 and are committing to an installation of no later than May 31, 2006.
