Q. What are
you doing with the dragon?
A:
Nothing! The Dragon will remain the same, except it will get a
new coat of paint in August when the volunteer group, VOICE,
does some work in the park.
Q: What is
VOICE going to do?
A:
The
Mercer Island Parks Department has solicited help from VOICE to
clear some brush in the park, install a new path from Island
Park Elementary School to the castle play area, and to paint the
dragon. VOICE (Volunteer Outreach In Communities Everywhere) is
a summer volunteer program hosted by the City of Mercer Island.
Q:
Why is MIPA involved?
A:
MIPA created the park through volunteer efforts in 1961. We are
enthusiastic to be a part of this rejuvenation effort!
Q:
What is MIPA going to do?
A:
MIPA will be replacing the antiquated and unsafe metal slide
area with a CASTLE!!! The castle colors will blend in with the
natural surrounding of the park and will be safe for children
ages birth to 6 and will be accessible to children of all
abilities. In addition to the castle, MIPA will be adding 2
pathways, metallaphone, and a dragon drum.
Q:
What do you mean by accessible?
A:
The
ADA has set certain standards for a park to be considered “ADA
compliant. We have exceeded each requirement. In addition,
MIPA actively sought the input from teachers, therapists and
administrators who work with children with moderate to severe
disabilities.
Q: What
does the ADA require?
A:
The
ADA requires a specific number of accessible ground level events
based on how many elevated play events you have. Based on our
current plan, here are the requirements associated with our play
area:
-
Elevated Play Events: ADA Requires: 9 MIPA
has: 16
